What CATCHLIGHT is
CATCHLIGHT is a jewelry brand that works the other way round from most. The designs are fixed; the stone is not. You pick a finished design, then choose the natural stone that goes into it — and, if you want, a short personal detail such as a name or a date.
Most pieces are centred on natural opal, set in 18K gold. Opal is the right stone for this model because no two are alike: the choice of stone is a real decision, not a decorative one.
The founder
Emily trained in jewelry design and spent five years at one of China’s larger jewelry houses. In 2016 a client asked her for a pendant for his daughter — the first opal she had ever held, and the first stone she had chosen for one particular person. The colour moved as the stone moved. She has worked with opal ever since, and started CATCHLIGHT to make pieces small enough to keep that kind of light close.
The name comes from photography: a catchlight is the small reflection of light in someone’s eye — a tiny detail that is what makes a portrait look alive.
What the studio makes
Everyday fine jewelry: pendants and necklaces, and rings. Pieces are designed to be worn without ceremony — the kind of thing that stays on, rather than coming out of a box twice a year.
Materials
- Natural opal — the centre of most designs. Selected one stone at a time, not by the parcel.
- 18K gold — the setting for the opal across the collection.
- Enamel — used as an accent in some pieces.
How a piece gets made
The design is settled first: proportion, comfort, and how the stone will be held. Only then is the stone chosen. That order matters, because the setting has to suit the specific stone rather than a generic size.
The design templates stay fixed and belong to the studio. That is deliberate — it is what keeps the proportions and the finish consistent from piece to piece. What is yours is the stone, and the personal detail if you want one.
