Opal types
explained.

White, crystal, black, boulder, matrix, fire. These are not grades and they are not rungs on a ladder. They describe three different things at once: the stone's body tone, how it is cut, and the ground it came out of.

“Opal” is not one thing

Every precious opal is hydrated silica — a lattice of microscopic silica spheres with water held between them. The play-of-colour comes from light diffracting through that lattice, which is why it shifts as you move the stone. Everything else — the names, the prices, the behaviour in wear — follows from three variables: how dark the background is, how the stone has been cut, and what it grew in.

White and light opal

The opal most people picture: a milky or pale background carrying a bright play-of-colour. It is by far the most abundant precious opal, and that abundance is a gift — it is where a first opal should come from, because you can get genuinely spectacular brightness for a fraction of what a black opal costs.

Crystal opal

Crystal opal is translucent enough that you look into it rather than at it. Because the colour play is visible through the body of the stone, cutters often keep it thinner and with a lower dome than usual, and the effect is a kind of internal depth that opaque opal cannot produce. Fully transparent material is sometimes called water opal.

Black opal

“Black” describes the body tone, not a black stone — the scale runs N1 (darkest) to N4. A dark background absorbs the light that would otherwise wash out the colour, so the same play-of-colour reads as dramatically brighter. Commercially, black opal means Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, and it is the scarcest precious opal there is. That scarcity, not any difference in the material, is the price.

Boulder opal

Boulder opal is a thin seam of opal that formed inside ironstone. Rather than cutting the opal free, the cutter keeps a slice of the ironstone as a natural backing and works the opal face down to it. The result is arguably the most practical precious opal in existence: the ironstone does the structural work, so the stone tolerates daily wear far better than a free-cut opal. Most boulder opal comes from Queensland.

The trade-off is visual. Boulder opal is irregular by nature — the face is whatever shape the seam was — so it suits designs that let the stone lead rather than geometric settings.

Matrix opal

Matrix opal is opal that fills the cracks and voids of its host rock, producing a speckled or veined pattern instead of a single clean face. Andamooka in South Australia is the best-known source, and much of that material is darkened with a sugar-and-acid treatment to make the colour read. Treated matrix is legitimate and can be beautiful; it should just be sold as treated, and priced accordingly.

Fire opal

This is where the vocabulary of opal gets genuinely confusing, and it is worth being precise. In the trade, fire usually means the brightness of the play-of-colour. But fire opal is a specific thing: transparent-to-translucent opal from Mexico with a warm body colour — yellow, orange, cherry red — which is often faceted like a conventional gemstone, and often shows no play-of-colour at all.

So a “fire opal” may be a faceted orange gem with no colour play, and a “white opal with good fire” is a pale stone with brilliant colour play. They are not the same stone, and the same word is doing two jobs.

Doublets and triplets: assembled, not solid

These are not opal types so much as constructions. A doublet is a thin slice of opal glued to a backing — usually dark potch or ironstone. A triplet adds a clear quartz or glass cap on top to protect it. Both are legitimate, both are much cheaper, and both must be disclosed. They are not solid opal and should never be priced as such.

Which type should you actually buy?

  • Pendant or earrings: almost anything works, because the stone rarely gets knocked. White or crystal opal gives the most brightness per dollar.
  • A ring worn every day: boulder opal, or a black opal set in a protective bezel. See is opal durable enough for everyday wear for why the setting matters more than the stone.
  • Something to keep: a solid black opal from Lightning Ridge with a defined pattern. Buy the stone, not the name — a black body tone with a weak pattern is still a weak stone.
